INTRODUCTION

MY  FORTY  EIGHT YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN THE NUMISMATIC FIELD ARE USED TO GIVE A CATALOGUE OF THE COINS SHOWN IN THIS WEBSITE

After years of research and study, I managed to complete the cataloging in all its forms of the coinage of the Serenissima Republic of Venice, dividing the subjects into the following chapters.

  • THE CHRONICE OF HISTORICAL AND POLITICAL EVENTS.

  • THE PRODUCTION OF COINS IN THE MINT.

  • COINS.
  • cataloging the coins issued under every Doge.

  • THE MASSARI OF THE MINT.
  • a very important research, which is by definition the essential missing argument.

The rarity of the coins of Veneto, through the acronyms (INITIALS) of the Confraternity of the mint responsable (MASSARO).

To explain the importance of this last chapter, we take for example the silver coins issued by the mint for Doge FRANCESCO ERIZZO. usually these coins are common, having been minted in large quantities.

DONA' BEMBO

15 APRILE 1637 - 15 APRILE 1638

Dona' Bembo, enters into the mint the 07th of April 1642 and leaves the 28th of June 1642, almost two months after his legal term.

The duration of each mint responsible by decree of the supervisors sopra gli ori et arzenti, must not excieed one year with the exception of particularly important events in which the period could extend further to a maximum of 4-6 months after the expiry of the mandate.

We know that the order of emission of these scudi of 140 soldi had been ordered by the supervisors to the mint responsible Donà Bembo for a number of 102,000 pieces (high sum for that period), but actually around 98,340 pieces were coined.

From then to now (year 2012) will remain roughly no more than 200-370 coins available on various markets including the coins owned by the collectors around the world.

If on the same SCUDO of 140 SOLDI there are the initials M A S (Marc'Antonio Soranzo), the rarity of the coin goes from common – uncommon to rarity grade: 5. now i will explane the reason of this changing of rarity.

Marc’Antonio Soranzo enters enters into the mint the 07th of April 1642, and died trhe 18th of June of the same year (only three months).

The time required for the execution of the coins, ranging from approntatura coinages of the final distribution at the front desk of the Senate are these:

3 days to engrave the dies (one piece).

1 day to temper the dies.

2 days to prepare sheets of silver to the established content (830/…millesimi).

1 day to prepare the silver roud discs (more less about 100-170 pieces).

2 days to show the coin proof to the supervisor sopra gli ori et arzenti, and have the approval to the execution, whit the registration into the proceedings of the Senate.

from 1 to 2 days to mint coins (about 100-150 pieces of good quality excluding waste).

1 day to enter the coins on the market through the bank of the Senate.

in total 10 working days .... if everything has gone well.

98,340 pieces were coined by the mint responsible donà bembo over 14 months.

We can immagine that 7024 pieces were coined each month, this is not exactly true for the simple reason that the scudi of 140 soldi were not minted in equal amounts every month, because of the strong changes due to the availability of the raw material (silver).

95,000 pieces (scudi of 140 soldi shields, with ducats S. Giustina and sub fraction) are ordered by decree of the Senate by the supervisors sopra gli ori et arzenti to the mint responsible Marc'Antonio Soranzo.

Excluding the 10 working days to prepare the cones and the final distribution, the coins with the initials - M A S - were minted for only one month and a half.

If all coincided with the disposition of the Senate, the production was around 9.000-10.000 pieces.

The actual euro value of the scudo of 140 soldi with initials  MAS (Marc'Antonio Soranzo), on the current market is around Euro 18.000.00 to 22.000.00.

Ten times more then the common scudo of 140 soldi with the initials D B (donà bembo).

The cataloging of the SCUDO of 140 SOLDI - is definitively and comprehensive.

CATALOGS ON THE MARKET

Catalogs on the market, excellent and beautifully crafted, are generally funtional to give a correct catalogation.

These catalogs give a history of the coins emission by the doges, giving the degree of rarity of coins issued under the life from the election until the death of the Doge.

Unfortunately they describe a very small and brief history of the events, it is impossible to find descriptive notes on the importance of the mint responsibles (Massari).
