EMIDRACHME, SUBMULTIPLES OF DRACHME
The only silver coins in addition to drachma that was coined, was the emidrachma.
This submultiple, recall the type of Massalia coinage.
In the year 1834, the imitation of obolo called of the wheel, were discovered in S. Cesario of Modena (North of Italy).
On the bulletin of the Archaeological Correspondence Institute, at the numbers X and XI of the months of October and November of the 1834 signed by C. Cavedoni, was described that in the territory of S. Cesario during the work of land, were found 8 coins. These Coins were donated at the Real Estense Museum by countess Teresa Boschetti.
The composition of the 8 coins was the following:
# 1 Drachma
# 4 silver imitations of the Obolo called of the wheel, of Massalia.
C. Cavedoni, wrote an observation in regard on reports:
This discovery is similar to the one given to us by Ch. Mionnet (suppl., pl. X, # 7); except that lacks
the M, and instead of it you see a segment of ball within each of the four areas or the rim wheel. Six of these nickels have the weight the drachma.
# 1 Roman Victoriatus with symbol - the head to measure in the field.
# 1 semisse uncial anepigrafe without with symbols.
# 1 small bronze of Rimini area.
Other examples of emidrachme and drachmas, were luckily recovered at Serra Riccò Apennines, north of Genoa.
Many different types of emidrachme are kept in museums, documenting a large variety of emissions.
WEIGHTS OF EMIDRACME
Considering the weight, these coins can be divided into two groups:
the first has a weight very close to the one of half drachmas (1.3-1.80g).
the second has a weight significantly lower much nearer to the weight of dell'obolo of Massalia (0.772-0.850g).
The book of Andrea Pautasso (Le Monete Preromane dell’Italia Settentrionale, 1966), meticulously describes the emidrachme classifying with its type, from 14° to 37° type.
Although the book of Andrea Pautasso was published in the year 1966, it is a milestone for Celtic coins of the North of Italy, and still remains basic for a thorough study of these coins.
Inevitably, over the years, new archaeological findings have revealed new types of both emidrachme and drachmas.
Even the markets, appeared quite a few types of drachmas other than that published in the sixties.
My intention is to make visible the drachmas and emidrachme unpublished.
Nowadays there are many theories regarding this type of coinage, and this, in my opinion, is constructive, if weighed against the right objectivity by scholars and collectors.
Definitely lacking today a complete informative and current text, which can somehow lead to a better understanding of the knowledge of the sixties.
